Earlier this year, it was rumored that Chris Pine (Star Trek, Into The Woods) would co-star alongside Gal Gadot in the upcoming superhero flick Wonder Woman, but the deal was never actually announced. Speaking to the French publication Premiere, the actor seemingly confirmed his involvement in the film, although he stopped short of revealing his role.
"I do not really know what I'm allowed to tell you," Pine said. "I'm super excited, of course, Gal Gadot is super talented, Patty Jenkins will perform, and we will shoot in film … What excites me most is to turn in a movie with a superhero woman. With a woman in the lead role. I am a team with this intelligent, beautiful and strong to destroy the wicked and save humanity."
The interview was printed in French so the English translation is a bit wonky, but it suggests Pine will indeed play the role of Steve Trevor, Wonder Woman's love interest. While I'm sure many would like to see Pine in the "damsel-in-distress" role so often reserved for women in these types of movies, previous rumors suggest Pine's character will have "plenty of action to keep him busy."
In the comics, Trevor was an intelligence officer in the United States Army during World War II. His plane crashed on Paradise Island, homeland of the Amazons, where he was nursed back to health by the Amazon princess Diana (Wonder Woman) who followed him when he returned to the normal world. She goes on to become Wonder Woman, as well as his co-worker under the identity Diana Prince. It's unclear if the movie will follow this exact premise, but the notion that there will be action surrounding Trevor indicates we could see some sort of flashback.
Regardless of Trevor's exact role in the film, the fact that Hollywood is finally giving us a solo film with a strong female superhero is certainly exciting.
Gal Gadot will make her debut as Wonder Woman in next year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on March 25, 2016. We got our first look at the actress in the role in the latest trailer (above) which debuted at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year.
