Christopher Lloyd, perhaps better known as Dr. Emmett Brown (Doc), is open to the idea of a fourth Back to the Future movie. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the iconic actor said he'd immediately sign on if the whole group — Robert Zemeckis, Bob Gale, Michael J. Fox, Lea Thompson and Thomas F. Wilson — reunited for one more time-traveling adventure.
"I would love to do Doc again, no question," Lloyd said, although he acknowledged that coming up with original story would be difficult.
"It's tough to come up with an idea that contains the excitement of the original three," Lloyd admitted. "So it would be a real challenge for the writers to come up with an original Back to the Future story that has the same passion and intensity and excitement as the other three. But it could be done, you never know."
If a fourth Back to the Future movie did somehow get greenlit, Lloyd was confident that Michael J. Fox would return as Marty McFly.
I think regardless of the Parkinson's, he'd probably jump on the role and he'd be great. I can't see doing another sequel without him. I would certainly want Bob Zemeckis directing it, Bob Gale writing it and the other principals being involved," he said, adding that the DeLorean would have to return as well because "It was such a perfect choice for the film. It looked so speedy and futuristic."
While Back to the Future is widely regarded as one of the best sci-fi adventure trilogies ever, the franchise has enjoyed a cultural resurgence thanks to the rapidly approaching October 21, 2015. With that being the exact date Doc and Marty travel to the future to in Back to the Future: Part II, there's been plenty of celebratory events planned for that day.
In addition to the date, there's also one more specific moment from Back to the Future: Part II that everyone's making a big deal about — the Chicago Cubs current postseason run. In the film, when Marty and Doc travel to 2015, they see the Cubs won the World Series, beating the Marlins and ending the 100-plus year drought. As a Cubs fan, I don't want to jinx the team, but so far the film's prediction has held true as the Cubs beat the Cardinals and now await the winner of the Dodgers/Mets game for the National League Championship Series.
"I didn't even remember about the Cubs until someone brought it up a few days ago," Lloyd said, adding that he'd be open to throwing out the first pitch should they reach the promised land. "Maybe it'll happen. We'll see. They got to get there first."
With Hollywood rebooting and remaking so many classic films, it's not hard to imagine that Back to the Future will someday get the same treatment; although, I can't imagine too many people would be on board with it unless the original cast returns. Then again, when does Hollywood care what the public wants?
