If you were wondering whether or not it pays to take the elements that caused a game to fail and spin them into working order with your own game, the answer is yes. Undoubtedly so. In 24 hours since release, Cities: Skylines — a city-building simulator in the same vein as SimCity — sold 250,000 units.
Despite a very , very similar premise, Cities: Skylines has received an overwhelmingly positive reception since launch. And for good reason too. Developer Colossal Order basically took the features we didn't like about SimCity and put them into Cities: Skylines. During the game's development there was talk about the game's offline gameplay, the extensive traffic system, and mod support. Oh, and bigger plots (you can expand into other areas too!).
Having given the game some play time, I can say that I have felt an itch to play more…and more…and more. There's never enough time. I need more!
