Civilization V: Brave New World’s new archeology gameplay belongs in a museum

After watching the Rev3Games interview with Ed Breach about Civilization V: Brave New World, the new archeology system was revealed with detail. Archeology is unlocked through the technology with the same name. This system is all part of the new tourism and cultural victory condition in the expansion. Once archeology is discovered, sites will appear all over the map based off of historic events that actually occurred in your game thus far. The location of the first barbarian battle, first ancient ruin you find, a great battle, etc. will all show up like oil does when you discover biology.

With archeologist units, you send them to these “antiquity sites” where they turn them into landmarks. These landmarks will generate culture and tourism for your civilization. Buildings like wonders, can hold great art works and produce extra bonuses for you. There are called themed bonuses. All of these aspects together will work towards a cultural victory.

As someone who’s been a fan of cultural victories in the past, these changes are quite exciting to me. I can’t wait to find out what the other aspects of the cultural victory mode are.  This expansion is shaping itself up to take many many hours away from my life – I can’t wait.
