LawBreakers is not a bad game by any means, in fact, it’s quite the opposite. However, the competitive shooter space is dominated by the likes of Overwatch, Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (on PC), so carving out a niche in a tight and established market is not an easy thing to do. Cliff Bleszinski and his team at Boss Key are finding out just how hard it is with the game’s player base struggling to keep up the numbers, particularly on Steam.
In an interview with Gamespot, Bleszinski said that the experience has been “humbling” for him as a result of his reputation for being “very cocky and very brash” on social media.
He said:
“I can be very cocky and very brash on social media. And realising that, you know, we have a fledgling player base. It’s been very humbling for me. I’m going to continue to iterate on this game, continue to add to it. And try to be less of a dick, honestly.”
He also says that what makes LawBreakers exciting is “not coming across right now,” in terms of its marketing but remains steadfast in his faith that the game will grow. Bleszinski points to Warframe developer Digital Extremes, which started out very slow with its free-to-play Cyborg-Ninja Action-RPG, which has grown exponentially into one of the most played games on the planet.
It’s not unusual for good games to get buried by bigger competition over marketing. Last year, Battleborn suffered the same fate, as it was often compared to Overwatch despite being a wildly different game. Despite the struggles, Bleszinski says he and the team will “continue to iterate” and “add to” the game.
Hopefully, from all of this LawBreakers and more importantly, the people who paid for the game, will be able to enjoy many a game session for years to come.
