I'm going to share something with you, GameZone fans. My original title for this news post was actually "Cliffy B is an insane man who wants multiplayer in Japanese games." Now that that's out of the way, let's discuss, shall we?
In an interview with Gamasutra, the Gears of War director stated that while he doesn't believe that Japanese developers should simply include a tacked-on multiplayer component, he does feel that "in a disc-based market right now, you cannot [ignore multiplayer]."
Bleszinski cited the awesome Shadows of the Damned as a perfect example, saying, "It was a beautifully crazy game with really fun gameplay, but no multiplayer co-op experience in there. I'm not saying tack on versus; there's a billion different ways you can do some sort of 'players interacting with other players.'" He also mentioned Vanquish, saying that it was a "crime" that there was no multiplayer functionality included in the game.
I never played Vanquish, but I did play Shadows of the Damned, and I absolutely loved it. I really doubt that the game's lack of multiplayer is what contributed to its low sales. Simply put, that game was a new IP entering a jaded market where people beg for new content one day only to fear it the moment it lands on store shelves the next. A co-op mode would have made absolutely no sense in Shadows of the Damned anyway.
At least Cliffy B thought Demon's Souls and Dark Souls were pretty cool and offered a unique spin on multiplayer gameplay. Can't argue with the guy there. Then again, it's hard to argue with a crazy person anyway, right?
Also, on a completely unrelated note, Cliffy B and Dane Cook look like the same person. That is all.
