Cloud gaming exec. has reason to believe that one of the current consoles will not get a follow-up

Speaking at this week's CES, Nanea Reeves, Chief Product Officer of a cloud gaming service called Gaikai, told reporters that one of the current consoles will not receive a follow-up. With the Wii-U on the way, all eyes are on Microsoft and Sony.

Reeves stated: "Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation. That will be the big news at E3."

While this rumor can only be taken with a grain of salt, speculation has already begun to rise with analysis wondering just what Reeves could be possibly hinting at. Logically, it makes the most since for Sony be whom the Gaikai executive is talking about. With Microsoft continuing to move massive amounts of Xbox 360, Sony could be looking to get ahead without having to produce a whole new console, saving billions.

So, could a partnership with between Sony and Gaikai be what Nanea Reeves is hinting at? Like we stated, it's all up in the cloud at this point (hah, get it?). It is fair to point out, though, that Sony has already invested in PC-like features and services, most notably the Steam integration that was native to the PS3 version of Portal 2.

Nonetheless, the idea that one of the two biggest console developers could be dropping out of the new console production war seems crazy, but somewhat believable. If true, E3 2012 will be a monumental point in gaming, and may introduce a whole new generation of things to come.
