Co-Op Multiplayer for Subnautica is here thanks to modders

Popular survival-sandbox game Subnautica has gotten a nice new way to experience the terrors of the depths together with a friend. Courtesy of a dedicated fan and modder, players can now play an early version of the co-op mod Nitrox with a friend on PC. Despite being still labelled as very early in development by the mod’s creator, there are already plenty nice features implemented. Check out the teaser trailer for the cool mod!

As is shown in the video, the multiplayer mod Nitrox is already offering plenty of useful features to enhance the multiplayer Subnautica experience beyond a simple proof of concept. With a deeply complex crafting game like Subnautica, adding such a big change like multiplayer in, things like game logic and item positioning could have very well been turned into chaos.

Here’s a quick rundown of what Nitrox is already capable of:

  • Client / Server Communication
  • Player movement
  • Picking up / Dropping item syncing
  • Long-range world syncing
  • Base building
  • Furniture building
  • Most furniture interactions (containers / medkit fabricators / chargers / etc)
  • Power management
  • Seamoth & Exosuit Syncing
  • Basic cyclops syncing
  • Rudimentary chat system
  • New HUD for remote players
  • Basic player animations

The dedicated modder who goes by the name Sunrunner is the person behind Nitrox. He first unveiled his work on the multiplayer mod way back in Summer 2017. He even got the blessings of the original developers of the game on the official forums.

You can get Nitrox for Subnautica via popular mod hoster Nexusmods here. There, you will also find detailed instructions on how to install and setup a multiplayer instance. It’s a lot easier than one might expect from the sheer ambition and magnitude of Nitrox. A simple installer for the mod can be found on the top-right corner on Nexusmods labled “Manual”.

The stars are all aligning well for fans of deep-water exploration games. Not only is Nitrox offering a great new way to play with a friend, but Subnautica is currently available for absolutely free on the newly opened Epic Store. But the promo is only going until this Thursday, so head on over to the game’s page and claim your copy of the game right now and keep it forever.
