With Paul Feig's upcoming Ghostbusters reboot on the way, Coca-Cola has filed to renew the trademark for Ecto Cooler, the Ghostbusters-themed Hi-C fruit juice-flavored drink of choice from the 90s.
Ecto Cooler was the special flavor created in assocation with The Real Ghostbusters, a cartoon series based on the 1984 live-action film, Ghostbusters. While the drink was only expected to last as long as the series, the drink's success and popularity led to its survival long after the series' final season in 1991. It wasn't until 2001 that Minute Maid, a division of Coca Cola, discontinued the product.
It's unclear what Coca-Cola's plans for Ecto Cooler are, but with Paul Feig's Ghostbusters remake on the horizon, there's a chance the company could be looking to bring back the popular drink. Or, it could be something as simple as Coca-Cola preserving their trademark so no one else comes in and swoops it away.
I don't know if Hi-C: Ecto Cooler was particularly healthy — I'm going to go ahead and guess no — but I sure as hell drank a ton of it growing up. And as far as I can tell, I didn't grow any third limbs. So I say bring it back! Sure, Slimer, the signature Ghostbusters character who appeared on the original Ecto Cooler carton, hasn't been confirmed for the new movie, but maybe we'll get another troublesome ghost on there.
