Over a year and a half after fans petitioned for his removal, Colin Trevorrow and Lucasfilm have "mutually chosen to part ways" over differences in "vision." To be clear, fans had nothing to do with the removal, but this is the second time this year that a director (or directors) has stepped down from a Star Wars film over "creative differences."
A brief statement was released on the official Star Wars website over Trevorrow's departure, and it is as follows:
"Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on Star Wars: Episode IX. Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon."
What it seems like at first glance is that Lucasfilm has a pretty rigid idea of what they want Star Wars to be, for better or worse. It's impossible to know exactly what is going on behind the scenes without actually being there, and we probably won't ever be given the full truth. "Creative differences" seems to be the go-to PR shtick for these kinds of things, so all we can do is wait and see who will replace Trevorrow.
Who do you want to see? J.J. Abrams finishing what he started? George Lucas brought out of retirement for one last hurrah? Someone else entirely? Let us know.
