While we won't get a new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens at San Diego Comic-Con, today's Star Wars panel could have another surprise — the official announcement of Colin Trevorrow as director of Star Wars: Espidoe 9.
According to Heroic Hollywood, Lucasfilm will bring out Colin Trevorrow onto the stage at Hall H and announce him as director, but, of course, this has yet to be confirmed (and probably won't be until it actually happens).
Trevorrow is all the rage right now, coming off directoring the very successful Jurassic World, which has already grossed $1.4 billion worldwide. Going from one blockbuster franchise to another, possibly bigger one, seems to be the only logical move for him right now.
Currently, Star Wars – Episode 7: The Force Awakens is being directed by JJ Abrams, while Rian Johnson is signed on to direct Episode 8. We're probably many years from seeing anything official for Episode 9, as Disney plans to release spinoff Anthology movies in between the core franchise films.
Trevorrow did wonders for Jurassic World which, in my opinion, was the best of all Jurassic Park sequels. While it wasn't without faults, you could tell that Trevorrow, more than anything, wanted to make a proper sequel. I imagine, he'll try to do the same with a new Star Wars film.
The Star Wars Comic-Con panel will be held at 5:30pm PST (9:30pm ET). Earlier this week, it was also announced that one of the new Star Wars Anthology films will focus on a younger Han Solo. We'll likely get some details on that as well today.
