Through the first four months, combined Xbox One and PS4 software sales are up 80 percent when compared to the combined software sales for Xbox 360 and PS3 during the same period.
Despite the "great start" for the Xbox One and PS4, February 2014's $318 million in software sales was actually a 9 percent decrease from February 2013's $352 million. NPD Group's Liam Callahan attributes the software losses to "declines for seventh generation consoles (Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii), which is expected as we transition from one console generation to another."
"Unlike the last few months where declines stemmed from the performance of new launches relative to last year, February 2014 launches were on par with those launching in February 2013 on a unit basis with only 1 percent fewer sales," Callahan added. "Due to lower average selling prices of games like The LEGO Movie Video game, and Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare, dollar sales of new launches decreased by 15% versus the performance of February launches”
