Core Pokémon games reach 200 million sales

Almost as many sales as there are Pokémon

The mainline Pokémon games, spanning Pokémon Red to Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, recently cracked the 200 million sales milestone.

As a hawk-eyed NeoGAF user spotted, Yahoo! Japan confirmed the news earlier today, clarifying that the series’ exact sales are closer to 201 million. This figure excludes spin-off series such as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon and the more recent Pokken Tournament; including them, Pokémon video games have sold 274 million copies.

Pokémon is no stranger to mammoth sales figures, of course. Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 alone sold 1.6 million units in their first two days, making them the third fastest-selling 3DS title in Japan. The series has also topped 3DS sales religiously for years, and remains a central pillar of Nintendo’s fiscal forecast.

Pokémon is only looking stronger with newly announced installments Sun and Moon on the horizon. New spinoffs are also in the works, chief among the augmented reality mobile title Pokémon GO, which has already begun testing in Japan.
