Doug TenNapel, who created Earthworm Jim, hinted on Facebook that a new game might be in the works.
"Everyone loves Earthworm Jim 1 and 2, and I don't generally acknowledge EWJ 3 as a real part of the Jim universe," an official post reads. "So if I was making another Jim game, would it be too confusing to call it Jim 3? Or would it have to be Jim 4? How about 'Earthworm Jim 4 the Fans'?"
Last year David Perry, the founder of Earthworm Jim developer Shiny Entertainment, said that a new game was likely though there were no immediate plans for one.
The run-and-gun platformer debuted on the Sega Genesis and then landed on the Super Nintendo and many other systems to date. It has spawned a number of sequels and an HD remake for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live in 2010.
