Cross-play on PlayStation 4 is now possible for all games

Sony has now officially opened up the gates for full cross-play among every single game on the PlayStation 4. The news comes after a year-long period of the cross-play beta where only select titles were able to offer the awesome multiplayer functionality.

Almost exactly one year ago, Sony and their massively popular PlayStation 4 were in the middle of a massive controversy. The Japanese gaming giant was adamant about keeping their player-base closed by not allowing gamers from other systems to play with PS4 users. This naturally led to fan backlash which culminated in Sony CEO Shawn Layden having to address the situation. Thankfully, the pushback of their customers led to Sony giving in, with Fortnite being the first game that enabled cross-play on the PS4.

Twelve months have passed and more and more games made use of cross-play functionality, but it was still in the self-titled “Extended Beta”. Thanks to an interview with Wired, we now learn that this cross-play beta is officially over, and that every developer can technically allow cross-play for their games.

It’s interesting that Sony didn’t decide to make a big deal out of the occasion and that it’s merely a side-note when talking about cloud gaming, but it marks the final step in a year-long debate. We hope that every multiplayer game going forward will start implementing cross-play and that older games will patch it. There’s no details about a list of titles which will patch cross-play, but we’re hoping to see many updates in the coming weeks.
