Timesplitters 4 may not happen anytime soon (if ever), but fans can still look forward to a new entry in the series — unofficial though it may be.
Intellectual property owner Crytek has given its blessing to Timesplitters Rewind, a team effort by 25 fans who are creating a new experience focused on multiplayer (8-16 players online) and the series' Challenge mode. The project originated in November 12 as the "100,000 Strong for Timesplitters 4" campaign. Rewind blends elements of the first three games and is powered by CryEngine 3, the game engine made by Crytek. The game will be re-created using original models as reference.
The fans are making Rewind for PC and are planning a demo for this December, with an official release to come shortly after.
Split-screen won't be a possibility, though. “CryEngine 3 SDK just doesn’t support split-screen, and it doesn’t seem like there is any way for us to implement that functionality," project manager Michael Hubicka told fans, according to Cooking with Grenades. "If Crytek decides to implement it into the SDK then we will definitely include it at that point."
The game will support Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 controllers.
The original developer, Free Radical, went under in 2009 and was purchased by Crytek, which turned it into Crytek U.K.
