Crytek Hopes for 8GB of RAM in Next Wave of Consoles

Crytek wants Microsoft and Sony to increase the amount of RAM in their next consoles by a considerable margin. The Crysis developers have toyed with the PC for years, and although they found working with consoles difficult because of meager performance specs, they relished the challenge.

Speaking to Digital Foundry, R&D Principal Graphics Engineer Tiago Sousa said that the PS3 and Xbox 360’s memory is “way too low,” more than likely hindering Crytek’s original plans for Crysis 2.

“My finger-pointing at Microsoft/Sony would really be on the memory side. It’s way too low, and the biggest crippling factor from a visual perspective,” he said. The pair’s 512MB of RAM is enough to pump out some beautiful games, but Sousa wants more. A lot more.

“I would really like to see next-gen console platforms with a minimum of 8GB,” he added. Can you imagine how a Crytek game would perform on a console with 16 times the current amount of RAM? Crysis 2 looks stunning on home consoles as it is. Anything better and users would enjoy the same benefits as PC owners, who have experienced pixel mastery due to Crytek’s famed graphical prowess.
