Cuphead’s co-founders had to remortgage their houses, quit jobs to meet their ‘dream scope’

The Xbox exclusive, Cuphead, got its official (and hopefully final) release date during E3 this year, after a long journey. We first saw Cuphead back in 2014 during Microsoft's E3 presentation. We saw the game again at E3 in 2015, but not in 2016 – the year it was delayed.

In 2015 it was clear to the developers behind Cuphead that there were plenty of gamers interested in their game, they just needed to deliver on it. Speaking with Gamesradar, Cuphead's co-creator and lead designer, Chad Moldenhauer detailed the journey that brought them to their final release date of  September 28 for Xbox One and PC.

“When we recognized that Cuphead was something that a lot of people seemed to want, we decided to go all out and make the game we always wanted to.”

It wasn't simple to get the game off the ground, Chad and his brother, who is also Cuphead co-creator Jared Moldenhauer, had to make some sacrifices in 2015 to get the ball rolling and meet their initial "dream scope" for the game.

“My brother and I quit our jobs, remortgaged our houses and began expanding the team. This was our chance to actually deliver the game we wanted to make all along, rather than the cut-scope game we originally planned with a three person team.”

The duo managed to pick their three-person team up and turn it into a 20 person team. Now, we can look forward to the game making its release in September!
