CD Projekt RED has shared the surprising news that with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, an ambitious anime spin-off is headed for the popular streaming service Netflix. But we advise not loosing too much thought on it since with a projected release date of 2022 there’s still plenty of time until you’ll be able to experience it in the comfort of your home.
There’s very little doubt that Cyberpunk 2077 is going to become one of the defining titles of the generation. Not only did the highly talented folks over at CD Projekt RED prove to everyone that they stand tall in the gaming industry when it comes to creating engaging and outstanding open-world RPG with The Witcher III but with the confirmation that owners of the game on current-gen systems will be getting a free upgrade on next-gen consoles, it’ll likely end up as a must-have for the start of next-gen.
During the recent Night City Wire installement, we were greeted with plenty of new game footage that exceeded our expectations by showcasing an entirely new area and game mechanics. But CD Projekt RED still had an ace up their sleeves.
CYBERPUNK: EDGERUNNERS tells a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he chooses to stay alive by becoming an edgerunner—a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.
All this hype has now led to the world of Cyberpunk 2077 spill over into another medium. Namely anime. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will be an entirely unique show that features a new character and an entirely original story set in the world of the game. It’s being handled by esteemed anime artisans Studio Trigger and features talent behind cult shows like Kill la Kill, Gurren Lagann, and more. So, the pedigree is poised to make Edgerunners a great anime at least.
