Cyberpunk 2077 had the biggest PC launch of all-time

After 8 years of waiting, Cyberpunk 2077 is finally out. It’s been one of the most anticipated games for quite some time and its initial numbers continue to back that up. The game had over 8 million pre-orders and broke 1 million concurrent players on Steam already.

This is a pretty massive achievement as the game hasn’t even been out for 24 hours at the time of writing. Single player games also don’t traditionally reach these kinds of concurrent numbers but the hype is real for CD Projekt Red’s RPG. The current record holder for concurrent players on Steam is PUBG, which had 3.25 million in January 2018. Cyberpunk 2077 peaked at 1.03 million last night, closely riding the records of games like Dota 2.

Despite some mixed reviews and controversies, the game pulled through in sales. CD Projekt Red revealed that 59% of the 8 million pre-orders for Cyberpunk 2077 were on PC. The futuristic RPG now has the biggest PC launch of all-time, beating out Diablo 3.

If you do some basic math, that means Cyberpunk 2077 has already sold about 4.72 million copies on PC and 3.28 on console. If every copy of the game cost $60, that would mean the game has already made $480 million. Of course, there are retailers that have discounts and some expensive special editions so it’s likely it made much more.

If Cyberpunk 2077 has good word of mouth, it could likely use that momentum to break a billion dollars in sales sooner rather than later. With free DLC and native next-gen versions on the horizon, it doesn’t seem too out of reach.

The game also sold a whopping 74% of its copies via digital marketplaces. Digital continues to be a preferred method of getting games, especially as consoles like PS5 dedicate disc-less consoles.

Cyberpunk 2077 is out now on Xbox One, PS4, Google Stadia, and PC. The game is also playable on Series X and PS5 via backward compatibility.
