Cyberpunk 2077’s new delay blows. But the volatile nature of game development simply makes it a necessity in certain situations. Add in the freak occurrence of Covid and it’s no surprise that we saw plenty of delays in 2020.
CD Projekt Red’s highly anticipated open-world action-RPG Cyberpunk 2077 is one of them. Maybe more than other games, the title experienced three delays this year alone.
Naturally, fans who waited for an entire generation for the game aren’t happy. Although the new delay is a mere three weeks. Originally slated for release mid-November, the new date is December 10th.
Apparently, this last-minute delay proved to be too much for some gamers. While delays usually come with cheeky social media posts and memes, this time things got very dark.
According to Andrzej Zawadzki, a Senior Game Designer on Cyberpunk 2077, the developers received death threats. It comes from a very small subset of the game’s community, of course. Still, under no circumstances is it right to threaten people with killing them. Especially in the case of a game.
Sadly, disturbing occurrences like this aren’t that uncommon in the gaming world. It seems that the anonymity of the web leads to certain troubled individuals channeling their hate in this ultimate form. Whether it’s controversial business decisions like monetizing mods or disappointing games.
[…] we have the game ready on the PC and it plays great on both next-gen consoles. We’re finalizing the process on the current gen. – Adam Kiciński, CD Projekt CEO
The situation gets even more complicated, now that we learn that Cyberpunk 2077 actually is finished and runs fine on PC and next-gen consoles. It’s the current-gen systems that prompted the delay. Let’s just hope that this entire ordeal will end on a good note.
