Cyberpunk 2077 gets hit with a five month delay; No next-gen plans

CD Projket Red has been hard at work on their highly ambitious RPG, Cyberpunk 2077, for nearly a decade. Last E3, they made a very big event out of announcing its release date by getting none other than Keanu Reeves to drop the news. It was easily one of the coolest moments of the generation but unfortunately, the date Reeves gave is no longer valid.

CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 will be pushed from April to September 17th, 2020. This comes just days after Square Enix delayed Marvel’s Avengers which will now release on September 4th. You can read the official statement from CD Projket Red on the matter below.

“We are currently at a stage where the game is complete and playable, but there’s still work to be done,” said the Polish studio on Twitter. “Night City is massive — full of stories, content, and places to visit, but due to the sheer scale and complexity of it all, we need more time to finish playtesting, fixing, and polishing. We want Cyberpunk 2077 to be our crowning achievement for this generation, and postponing launch will give us the precious months we need to make the game perfect.”

As for if the delay could allow for a port of the game on the upcoming next-gen consoles, CD Projekt isn’t really focused on that at the moment.

“We are going with the same plans that we set,” said CD Projekt Red joint CEO Adam Kiciński in a call talking about the new date. “[Cyberpunk 2077] was always designed for [PS4 and Xbox One]. We are thinking about the next generation, but for now, we are focused on the current generation. That plan is still valid.”

The company has expressed interest in the next-gen consoles in the past but it’s entirely possible that the delay of the current-gen versions will delay any ports.

Cyberpunk 2077 will release on September 17th for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
