Cyberpunk 2077 broke major records when it launched last month. It had the biggest PC release of all-time, sold 13 million copies across all platforms, and cracked 1,000,000 concurrent players at one point. Now that the dust has settled, the game’s player count is dropping.
Of course, it’s worth noting that this is a single-player game that has been out for about a month. While this is a significant drop, it’s not uncommon for single-player games to see a drop after release. According to GitHyp (via GameSpot), Cyberpunk 2077 has lost 79% of its Steam player count bringing it down to 200k at its current peak. It took The Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red’s previous game, about 3 months to lose that much but it started at a much lower 92k player count.
Earlier this year, Marvel’s Avengers also had a huge player count drop. A month after the game released, it dropped to less than 1,000 concurrent players. This was a much more notable drop since it was a major online game.
PC is currently one of the best places to play Cyberpunk 2077. Bugs aside, it’s where the game performs well and by many accounts, is where people should play the game if they can. The console versions have been notably rough. The game was pulled from the PlayStation Store, mass refunds were issued, and investors are filing lawsuits. It’s been a bumpy ride and led to negative reviews for the console versions.
There are major patches slated to release this month and next month which will hopefully stabilize all versions. Cyberpunk 2077 will also get free DLC in “early 2021” as well as native next-gen versions later this year. CD Projekt Red hasn’t released details on the DLC as they’re trying to fix the main game right now.
