Indie developer Red Hook Studios revealed Darkest Dungeon 2. The sequel to the 2015 breakout hit is slated for release in 2021 on the Epic Games Store. Watch the reveal teaser trailer below!
PC gamers rejoice! One of the most unique and addictive roguelikes of the past decade gets a sequel soon. With Darkest Dungeon 2, developer Red Hook Studios aims to deliver much more than just more of the same.
The sequel leaves the 2D plane and goes full 3D. A first for the franchise. It sure looks like indie developers get more experimental in venturing the third dimension. Risk of Rain 2 famously made a similar jump with outstanding results. Let’s hope the same will be the case for Darkest Dungeon 2.
Truth is though, that creating a 3D game can take much more time and thus investment. This is especially hard for indie studios. It’s maybe that why Red Hook Studios and Epic made an exclusivity deal with the new game.
Darkest Dungeon II is about hope, grit and determination. It reminds us that in times of crisis, we can’t wait for salvation, we have to find it ourselves – earn it, in spite of our weaknesses.
Yes, Darkest Dungeon 2 will be an Epic Games Store exclusive when it comes out in 2021. Unsurprisingly, the game will launch in Early Access. So, expect to experience an evolving game, in case you plan on jumping in early.
The first game also launched on Early Access originally, albeit on Steam, and it took the developers only a year to release the final product in the end. A promising sign for the development of Darkest Dungeon 2 no doubt.
Sadly, we only have a teaser trailer for now, so it’s difficult to really see how the transition to 3D gameplay will work in the end. Expect to see more about Darkest Dungeon 2 in the future. You can already wishlist the game on the Epic Games Store.
