Dark Souls 3 could be the the last in the series

FromSoftware has become extremely popular with a niche of gamers that are looking for what can essentially be described as masochistic RPG games. The developers are behind Demon's Soul, Dark Souls and Bloodborne, games accredited for the sanity shattering difficulty.

Once players pick up a rhythm in the FromSoftware games, things tend to get a bit easier, but after you complete a Souls game there's nothing really that can replace it. With the studio acknowledged for their Souls games, it would be a big risk for them to branch out and try something new.

According to the studio's president, it looks like they might be hanging up the Souls series to explore new horizons.

"I don't think it'd be the right choice to continue indefinitely creating Souls and Bloodborne games. I'm considering Dark Souls 3 to be the big closure on the series," said FromSoftware President Hidetaka Miyazaki to GameSpot. "That's not just limited to me, but From Software and myself together want to aggressively make new things in the future. Dark Souls 3 will mark the last game where the development project began before I became president."

As for what game that would be, it looks like Miyazaki and his crew have already begun contemplating it. "The next title will be a game that was conceived while I was president. I believe that From Software has to create new things," continued Miyazaki. "There will be new types of games coming from us, and Dark Souls 3 is an important marker in the evolution of From Software."

As for my take, abandoning the Souls series isn't something I'd like to see happen so quickly. Dark Souls 3 might be the last in the Dark Souls series, but that still leaves room for other games within the franchise. I wouldn't mind seeing FromSoftware taking a break from the franchise, but not forever.
