Dark Souls 3 director Hidetaka Miyazaki’s next game won’t be dark fantasy

Director Hidetaka Miyazaki has ridden the runaway success of the Dark Souls IP to the top of From Software’s corporate ladder. In a decade, he’s gone from designer to president, no-name to all-star. His next project, Dark Souls 3, will release later this month. And after all the darkness, brilliant as it was, Miyazaki is ready for a change of scenery.

“Although [Dark Souls 3] is going to be a turning point for the franchise, it doesn’t necessarily mean I’m not going to work on any dark fantasy games in the future,” Miyazaki said in an interview with Eurogamer. “However, at least for the next title that I’ll be working on after Dark Souls 3, that will be different from dark fantasy.”

Miyazaki really got his start with Demon’s Souls, a PS3 cult classic that was popular and promising enough to spawn Dark Souls, which benefited greatly from its multiplatform release. For Dark Souls 2, he handed the directing reigns to Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura, only to return to direct Bloodborne and, now, Dark Souls 3. Gwyn knows what he'll think up next.
