‘Dark Souls is over’ says series director Miyazaki; New game in development

"Dark Souls is over" says the genius behind the series Hidetaka Miyazaki. Dark Souls 3 is the last one planned, after that it is over for Miyazaki. It is time to turn the page.

After the success of both Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 many had hoped for Miyazaki to keep on making those types of games, but Miyazaki said in an interview with Taiwanese GNN Gamer, translated by NeoGaf with the help of Google Translate that he is done with Dark Souls and all similar games.

Just like previous games Dark Souls 3 will have several DLCs, and it looks like it will be the last of Dark Souls we'll get to see in a while.

"Dark Souls 3 will be have several DLCs like previous games. But there’s absolutely no plan right now for any sequels, spin-offs or tie-ins."

But Miyazaki isn't closing the door completely.

"But I can’t say for certain the possibility is 0%. For example, if a FROM Software developer comes to me five years from now and begs ‘please let me make another Dark Souls‘. Then I will not rule out the possibility to let my subordinates start a new project."

After all, Miyazaki did not lead the development of the second installment in the Dark Souls series, Dark Souls 2. That game was handled by another team.

Instead Miyazaki is looking forward towards new challenges and new games to make. Dakr Souls is over for him.

"What is certain for now is, to me personally Dark Souls is over. So rather than make another sequel, I think it’s time we take a step to a new direction. Development of a new IP has already begun."

This new IP will most likely not be anything like Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Only Miyazaki himself knows what the future holds and what type of games he will work on next. And it will definitely not be a Demon's Souls remaster since when he was asked about it he said "We want to try making new things."

Maybe it is a good thing that the beloved series ended on a high note instead of it being milked until everyone hated it.
