At The Game Awards, Dead Space creator and Sledgehammer Games co-founder Glen Schofield showcased his new game. His new studio, Striking Distance, is allowing him to go back to his survival horror roots. We got a taste of the gross, violent sci-fi horror chaos in the reveal trailer for the game
The Callisto Protocol is very early in development but already looks to be shaping up to be something great. The game takes place on the moon of Jupiter in 2320 in a maximum security prison. You can check out the trailer below.
“The Callisto Protocol is the culmination of decades of experience building AAA games,” said Glen Schofield, founder and CEO of Striking Distance Studios. “We’ve built a world class studio of passionate developers that is ready to once again tackle one of our all-time favorite genres—survival horror. We’re setting out to make one of the most terrifying games of all time, and we can’t wait to share more about The Callisto Protocol next year.”
A representative for Striking Distance confirmed to us that the game “takes place hundreds of years in the future in the PUBG universe.” We’ll learn more about the story and lore in 2021.
We spoke to Glen Schofield about his new studio and project earlier this year. It sounds like he has a lot of freedom with the PUBG project, hence the survival horror aspect.
“… it’s not necessarily a PUBG game. It’s my game within the PUBG universe, meaning I came in with an idea and a bit of a story and they loved the idea. It just so happens that they’re in the middle of writing this big universe, it’s a giant universe. It just so happens that this game we’re gonna write will fit into that universe but it’s a game all into its own,” said Schofield earlier this year.
“We are building a big narrative game, the way I’m thinking about it now with the first iteration, it’s a single-player experience. Who knows where else we’ll take it but yeah, it’ll be cinematic. It’ll very big on the story as well as the action and everything else. I want to tell a great story.”
The Callisto Protocol will release in 2022 on consoles and PC.
