Biggest opening day for an R-rated movie

Following a record-breaking preview night, 20th Century Fox's Deadpool has gone on to set a new record for an R-rated film's debut day.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Deadpool — which stars Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth — earned $47.5 million on opening day, a new record for an R-rated feature. It also puts it among the top 10 comic book movie openings of all time.

As far as other Fox superhero movies go, Deadpool's opening day is also higher than any of the studio's other X-Men related films to date.

With such an impressive debut, Deadpool is now on track to gross $117 million during its first three days and $130 million over hte course of hte four-day President's Day weekend.

With Fox seemingly having reservations about Deadpool's R-rating, the studio must be pleased with its strong opening. With impressive reviews from fans and critics alike, Deadpool is looking like a winner.
