Death Stranding will release before 2019, says Kojima

Hideo Kojima is making a major appearance over at Tokyo Game Show 2016 today, taking part in a Q&A for his upcoming game, Death Stranding. While he got a bit off topic with a question related to Metal Gear Survive, thankfully he did talk more about Death Stranding, precisely when we might expect it to release.

He said, in a somewhat coy manner:

“It will be out before the Olympics. To go a little further, there is a movie called Akira, and it will be out before the year in which Akira is set.”

The next Olympic games take place in Tokyo in 2020 during the Winter, and the movie Akira takes place in the year 2019, so a reasonable conclusion based on these two time frames is that the target release window for Death Stranding is sometime in 2018.

Kojima has not been shy about hyping Death Stranding this far, referring to it as his “best work so far”. As of three months ago, the game was only “very close” to going into full production, so despite the hype that the game generated at Sony’s E3 Press Conference, the breaks need to be put on just a little bit since it is still a way off.
