Designers of Xbox 360 controller now working with Oculus

Virtual reality forerunner Oculus has added yet more talent to its wings, today announcing its acquisition of the Carbon Design Team, best known for designing the iconic Xbox 360 controller.

In the blog post announcing the partnership, Oculus states that they have been collaborating with the team on several unannounced projects since mid-2013. However, Carbon is only just now becoming an official member of Oculus.

“As part of the deal, the team will officially become a key component of the product engineering group at Oculus,” the company said, “operating from the Carbon studio in the Seattle area. They’ll also be working closely with the Oculus R&D team based out of Redmond.”

Creative Director Peter Bristol further addressed the role Carbon will play Oculus: “This is an entirely open product category. With consumer VR at its inception, the physical architectures are still unknown — we’re on the cutting edge of defining how virtual reality looks, feels, and functions.

With that said, their exact responsibilities have yet to be fully detailed and indeed may never be explained in depth. With that said, it’s a safe bet to expect future builds of Oculus’ Rift HMD (head-mounted display) to reflect Carbon’s design experience.
