‘Desolation’ update adds space horror to No Man’s Sky

In space, no one can hear you scream

Hello Games has pushed the newest update for their universe-spanning co-op space-explorer No Man’s Sky. With ‘Desolation’ players can look forward to exploring deserted freighters in hopes of finding big booty. Check out the trailer here!

Even though four years have passed since the launch of No Man’s Sky, the small development team over at Hello Games is still improving and adding to the already infinite player content.

This most recent update adds a horror twist to the endless void of space in the form of freighters. These are procedurally generated and thus add on top of the unpredictable nature of exploration. Not only are the ship themselves always different but the interior layout itself is also unique between each of them!

Scavenge and survive in the haunted wreckage of derelict freighters with the Desolation update. Introducing procedurally-generated freighters, more story content, combat improvements, freighter customisation and more!

These derelict freighters offer great rewards for adventurers but also harbor dark secrets. Aliens have used the deserted ships as a nesting ground, so be prepared to fight for your right to explore.

Not only are locales procedurally generated but each freighter offers its own backstory for players to unfold. An interesting approach that should be a great incentive to scour through captain logs and the crew quarters.

Accompanying this new playstyle, the combat mechanics have been overworked which should come handy fending of hostile aliens and robots. There are also a lot of Quality-of-Life improvements in this new update alongside several technical improvements to the visuals which you can read in greater detail in the update blog post.

The Desolate update for No Man’s Sky is live now as a free update for owners of the game on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
