Despite controversy, Hatred is a Steam ‘Top Seller’

You know what all the overblown controversy surrounding an Adults Only-rated game gets you? To the top of the Steam store, apparently.

Destructive Creations new isometric shooter Hatred released today on Steam, and for all the crap the developer's received for their game being too brutal and violent, it doesn't appear to be hindering sales. Hatred is currently sitting comfortably atop Steam's "Top Sellers" list, above blockbuster titles such as Grand Theft Auto 5, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

In recognition of this outstanding achievement, Destructive Creations released the following statement:

"It’s hard to decide where to start the sum up of Hatred’s passed development year and what event during months of working on the game was most important. The announcement trailer that made the whole world talking about the game? The fact that the game got Adults Only rating as one of very few titles? Steam taking down the game from Steam Greenlight and then bringing it back thanks to personal decision of Gabe Newell himself? Or first reviews and let’s plays maybe that are already spreading in the internet? Hard to choose really but one thing is 100% sure. Making Hatred and bringing it to the release date wouldn’t be possible without the constant support and encouragement from the game and studio fans all over the world."

Hatred's initial reveal last October was met with mostly negative response, but not necessarily by gamers; rather, it was the media who came out in full force against the game, which puts you in the shoes of a nameless psycopathic mass murder on a massive killing spree. I'll admit, even I was taken aback by the senseless violence and over-the-top gruesomeness. I initially wrote it off as an offensive premise disguised as fun, but over time my opinion changed, and I viewed it for what it is — a video game. It's premise may not appeal to me, but the outcry of the gaming media and others (read: Twitch) is just baked in hypocrisy.

Hatred's extremely violent premise has taken the gaming industry by storm, and the controversy it has generated has sparked some unfair criticism — especially when you consider what the gaming industry does deem appropriate.
