A major leak which happened over at Engadget basically confirms that Destiny 2 is getting a major soft-reboot in form of a name change into Destiny 2: New Light and by offering the base game as a free-to-play title this September. While Engadget quickly took down their original article, Reddit users already reposted the news.
What is it with E3 and leaks? Every year stores, journalists or industry insiders feel the need to spoil surprises in advance. We’re not complaining however as it only makes the wait for the true E3 experience that more exciting. After this week’s other big leak about Watch Dogs: Legion, it’s Bungie’s Destiny 2’s turn.
This time, it’s the website Engadget’s fault who accidentally published an article too early about the upcoming major changes to Bungie’s Destiny 2. Thanks to Reddit, we still got all the details. Bungie has been teasing the reveal of the next chapter of their online shooter in a livestream set for today at 10 am PT. Now, we know about the most prominent update.
Destiny 2 is going free-to-play this September 17 and will be renamed into Destiny 2: New Light. This free version will feature all year-one content and aims to lure in new players into Destiny 2 which had a rocky start. Furthermore, the game will become available on the popular PC gaming platform Steam. Exisiting players will soon be able to migrate their progress and purchases onto Steam.
This also ties in to Bungie’s changes to a more comprehensive cross-platform support. Users will be able to access their characters on both the Xbox One and PS4. This will likely expand onto to PC in the future. There will also no longer exist platform-specific exclusive weapons, maps etc. It will all be a level field which is good for everyone.
Stay tuned for more details about Destiny 2: New Light later this day.
