Destiny is the most pre-ordered new video game IP in history, Activision confirmed today. Though the publisher previously hinted this would be the case back in August, a press release sent out today hyping tomorrow’s release officially confirmed it.
Destiny’s servers went live today at 12:01am in New Zealand; however, it will release at midnight local time in each territory, meaning there’s still time to pre-order what is destined to be one of the biggest entertainment launches of the year.
"Destiny has been a labor of love and a remarkable creative journey for everyone at Activision and Bungie," said Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg. "We feel that we have the opportunity to launch something huge – not just into the gaming landscape, but the pop cultural landscape. Arriving at our launch day with this much support and enthusiasm from fans and retailers is downright exciting. Moments like this just don't come around very often."
Developed by Bungie, the creators of Halo, Destiny looks to be the next blockbuster franchise in gaming. And Bungie is certainly on board with that.
"Destiny is the game we've always wanted to make," said Bungie president Harold Ryan. "We've dreamt of this universe for years, so we couldn't be more thrilled to swing open the doors and let fans shape this experience as they tell their unique stories in the game. For us, the next generation of games is all about allowing players to collide and interact with each other as they take on epic, action-packed adventures all their own."
Last week, Activision revealed that those who buy Destiny for a last-gen system will also get the PS4 or Xbox One version as a free upgrade — as long as it’s within the same console family.
