Although Activision didn't reveal specific sales numbers for Destiny, the publisher did say that Bungie's MMO shooter now has more than 9.5 million registered users. Though that number gives us an idea of the amount of copies sold, Activision admits it's not an exact representation.
"There's a relationship to sell through, but it's not exact as some people have more than one profile," Activision noted during its third quarter 2014 financial call.
What's more impressive, perhaps, is the player engagement Destiny is seeing. According to Activision, active players are averaging more than three hours of gameplay per day.
For the third quarter, Destiny was the largest new franchise launch in video game history, and it currently ranks among the top 10 largest video game launches of all time in the United States. The game's sales success — regardless of its mediocre reception — helped lead to "better-than-expected" financial results for Activision for the third quarter of 2014. Strong sales from Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls – Ultimate Evil Edition, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, and World of Warcraft also contributed.
Interestingly, Activision's Eric Hirshberg revealed that Bungie is "already underway on its next full game." It's unclear, however, if it'll be a sequel to Destiny, which was previously said to be developed with a 10-year vision in mind.
