For all the complaints I see any time I post something about Destiny on Facebook, there sure are a lot of people who seem to be enjoying it. According to Activision's latest figures, Destiny now boasts 25 million registered players, up from last quarter's 20 million.
The growth in players can likely be attributed to the release of Destiny: The Taken King, the largest update the game has seen yet. The Taken King, which was released in September, broke PlayStation records for day-one downloads and on day one saw the highest number of active players in Destiny's history. While we don't know how many accounts are still active, Bungie did note that daily player engagement is "well above" three hours per day. Destiny has also become the most watched console game on Twitch.
Although Bungie's online shooter had a rough go at it early on, the game has steadily improved throughout the past year with updates and expansions addressing many complaints. From lack of story to the endless grind for loot, Destiny today is nowhere near what Destiny was at launch — and that's a good thing.
