Destiny: The Taken King is due out on September 15th for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360. Sony's new Limited Edition Destiny: The Taken King PS4 Bundle just went on sale today.
In Bungie’s weekly update, the developer has taken us on a tour of Dreadnaught, the “space-faring fortress of destruction” in Destiny’s upcoming expansion, The Taken King.
Talking conceptually about the new location, senior artist Andrew Hopps explained it was important for Bungie “that you would feel the scale as you moved through the hulls of the Dreadnaught, never sure about what to expect as large spaces condensed to claustrophobic tunnels before revealing entirely new areas of the ship.”
“A sense of wonder about the unknown is what drove a lot of the spatial design,” he explained. “It was an incredibly fun challenge to find the right balance between a mysterious tomb ship and the flagship for the Taken fleet – to capture the idea of this unfathomable threat, a monstrous spaceship captained by the Taken King, yet filled with vast caverns and unknown passages. I can't wait for players to explore and discover all of its secrets.”
The Dreadnaught is more than just a location in the game. It’s the focal point of The Taken King’s story campaign as well as the centerpiece of The Taken War, “a progression that extends well beyond the traditional storyline.” This monstrous ship will also provide players a new place to explore and Patrol.
Originally pitched as “an inscrutable loot-filled fortress,” Dreadnaught was designed to offer players more things to do — a suite of new mechanics have been created and woven into Patrol mode so that every day you will be drawn back to fight through its depths. Bungie promises new Bounties, Patrol Missions, and Public Events “more challenging than anything else you’ve attempted before on Patrol.” There are also secrets to unlock, including hidden treasures and surprise bosses that Bungie says won’t be apparent the first time you explore the ship.
“How to succeed won’t be obvious at first,” designer Ben Wommack explained, “but the rewards will be worth your effort. Get ready to fight bosses and encounters in surprising combinations of circumstances, and look to your fellow Guardians for help. Patrol is no longer easy mode.”
Bungie also included a slew of in-game shots of the Dreadnaught to go along with all the details. You can check out the gallery below.
