Destiny to abandon Xbox 360, PS3 users by August

Winter is coming for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 Destiny players. Much like the way Rockstar abandoned Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 GTA Online players, Destiny will giving the cold shoulder to "Legacy Console" users come the end of Summer.

According to Bungie, in August 2016 future Destiny updates and content releases will "only be available on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles." This is because the developer is categorizing the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as Legacy Consoles, like the original Xbox and PlayStation 2.

Destiny: The Taken King will continue to be available on the Xbox 360 and PS3, but players will have "limited access to events." What does this really mean for users though?

Well, the upcoming expansion 'Rise of Iron' will not be releasing on Xbox 360 and PS3 – something we already knew – and some weekly events will no longer be available. Trials of Osiris, the Iron Banner and all Live Events like Festival of the Lost, Crimson Days or the Sparrow Racing League will no longer be available.

Heroic Missions, Strikes, Crucible Challenges (Daily/Weekly), Raids, Prison of Elders, Challenge of Elders, Armsday Orders, Test Weapons, and Boss Challenges will remain available. Additionally, Xur will remain available, but with some changes (as per Bungie's wording):

  • Individual Exotic Weapons and Armor pieces will no longer be sold by Xûr.
  • Encrypted Exotic Engrams will be sold. These will decrypt into Year 2 Exotics.
  • Encrypted Legacy Engrams will continue to be sold. These will decrypt into Year 1 Exotics.
  • Heavy Ammo Synthesis, Three of Coins, Vehicle Upgrades, Motes of Light, and Glass Needles will continue to be sold.

In order for players to be able to participate in all Destiny events, including expansions, players will have to upgrade from Legacy Consoles to current gen consoles and purchase Destiny: Rise of Iron once it releases.
