Bungie announced that Destiny will be undergoing maintenance today, December 3rd. The maintenance will begin at 9:00am PST and is expected to conclude around 1:00pm PST.
During this time, you'll be unable to log into Destiny or Bungie.net and the Companion app. If you are logged in to the game, you'll receive a message shortly before maintenance begins.
Bungie didn't specifically say the reason, but I'm assuming it's regular maintenance, perhaps in anticipation of the December update, which is scheduled to arrive this month. Today's maintenance probably sets the stage for the slew of changes coming in December, including the weapon tuning, class balancing, and all the new year one exotic upgrades.
