Destiny may have won the most awards at Gamescom last week, but when it comes to "conversation and buzz" surrounding the title, there were quite a few games at the show which performed better in the social media aspect.
Social media research firm Fizziology, a company which tracks and analyzes consumer response to a product via social media outlets, has told us that Destiny saw less than 5,000 tweets during the convention. Compare to that to Titanfall, awarded the best next-gen console game and best Xbox game at the show, which saw more than 30,000 mentions that week.
Neither could compare to FIFA 14, which drew 244,000 tweets during the week's activities. According to Fizziology, this game saw the highest increase in social media mentions since the conference began — not doubt a response to Microsoft's announcement that every Xbox One console sold at launch will come with a free copy of the game.
Battlefield 4 was the second most talked-about game, seeing more than 100,000 tweets — an increase in conversation by 223%.
So what exactly does all of this mean? Fizziology's data normally gives us a good outlook on what consumers are looking forward to; Battlefield 4 and FIFA 14 are two extremely anticipated games launching this year, and both had online presence for those unable to attend the European-based show in person. I have no doubt that anticipation for Destiny is high, but a relatively quiet Gamescom showing coupled with a 2014 release has likely tempered excitement.
