Earlier today, Destructive Creations launched a Steam Greenlight campaign for their dark, twisted isometric shooter, Hatred. After just a few hours on Steam, Valve shut down the campaign, giving the developer the vaguest of reasons.
“We wanted you guys to know that based on what we see on Greenlight we would not publish Hatred on Steam. As such we’ll be taking it down," Valve told Destructive Creations. Though no specific reasons were given, it can be assumed that Valve's decision was based on criticism towards the game's premise, which involved putting players into the shoes of a nameless psychopath on a nonsensical mass murdering spree.
"Even though games like Manhunt or Postal are still available on Steam we of course fully respect Valve’s decision, as they have the right to do so," Destructive Creations told us, assuring that Valve's decision won't "in any way" impact the game's development, vision or gameplay features. As such, Hatred is still on track for a Q2 2015 release.
Destructive Creations didn't stop there though. Attached to their letter to fans, the developer included a screenshot of their Greenlight campaign, revealing some jaw-dropping numbers. While many — myself included — refer to Hatred as "controversial," the Greenlight campaign actually painted a completely different picture, one in which gamers were overwhelmingly in support of.
As you can see in the attached graphic, Hatred gathered 13,148 up votes and ended up as #7 on the Top 100 list. Considering there were only 17,464 unique visitors to the page, it's clear that more than half the visitors were in support of the game.
"This is the best proof for us that there are diehard Hatred fans out there, waiting for this game to be released. And that we need to keep going to deliver them a game that offers exciting and challenging gameplay," Destructive Creations added. "The whole situation only pushes us forward to go against any adversity and not to give up. It also makes us want to provide our fans Hatred pre-orders sooner, as many of you have asked for them."
"At the end of the day you, gamers will judge if we were able to do a game that’s simply fun to play," the developer concluded.
Do you agree with Valve's decision to remove Hatred from Steam Greenlight?
