In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Gameplay Director Patrick Fortier and Producer Oliver Proulx shed new light on Deus Ex: Mankind Divided’s systems, clarifying that boss fights and conversation instances will be separate altogether.
The confusion comes from a July 2015 interview, in which Fortier confirmed that players will be able to get through certain encounters in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided using only their silver tongue. Many understood this feature to also apply to boss fights, which can be beaten violence-free.
“Some of the communication about that has been muddled a bit,” Fortier said. “People took all different kinds of parts and muddled them into one. So, there are verbal debates with certain NPCs, [and] classic boss fights are another thing. They’re two separate things. Having said that, in a classic boss fight we will support combat, stealth, lethal, non-lethal [ways] we didn’t necessarily manage in Human Revolution.”
Not killing bosses often boils down to ensnaring them in environmental hazards or simply immobilizing them, Fortier said. Conversations, however, are not a matter of talking someone to death but rather winning them over to your side—or at least a side that doesn’t want your head on a plate.
