Looks like Majesco, the creators of BloodRayne and Zumba Fitness, are trying to cull the herd in an effort to stay afloat. Late in July they replaced their CEO, Jesse Sutton, with David Rector, though Sutton will be staying on in a consulting capacity. This also comes with the company’s attempt at shifting away from the retail gaming business and turning their sights towards the digital download gaming model.
In a letter to shareholders, Sutton described download gaming as “essentially a royalty business where games are downloaded from servers maintained by game companies, such as Valve, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo.” This also came along with the announcement that they had reduced their staff from 16 full time employees to only 5.
While Sutton remained optimistic throughout the letter and pointed to their anticipated release of A Boy and His Blob for next gen, this serves as a reminder of just how precarious a blade a lot of gaming developers dance on. We’ve seen a lot of developers fold in the last handful of years, and it would be a shame to see one that’s been around for nearly 30 years go the same way as the others.
