Not one to abandon old projects, Blizzard recently updated Diablo 2 with the first patch the game has seen in five years.
Diablo 2 first released in 2000, so patch 1.14a was technically 16 years in the making. It focuses on optimizing the dated title for modern operating systems, allowing yet more players to sample Diablo 2’s dungeons.
“There is still a large Diablo II community around the world, and we thank you for continuing to play and slay with us,” Blizzard said in a forum post. “This journey starts by making Diablo II run on modern platforms, but it does not end there.”
GameSpot reports that Blizzard is also working on an update for the Warcraft 3 RTS, which originally released in 2002. The details of the patch have not yet been revealed, but it’s safe to assume it too will receive compatibility improvements.
We have Blizzard’s Classic Games Division to thank for the restoration of old titles like these. Formed in late 2015, the division was designed to restore old titles to their former glory and allow today’s players to access them without fuss. Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3 were prime targets for restoration, along with the original StarCraft. Blizzard also said they would consider new ideas, so content-driven updates aren’t totally out of the question.
