An Xbox One version of Diablo 3 is in development, Blizzard has revealed. Speaking to Videogamer, lead producer Alex Mayberry explained Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition is in development for Microsoft's new console, but acknowledged the game may never actually be released for it.
"I don't know where we are with Microsoft right now so I can't really comment on what that contract looks like," Mayberry said. "The point is we are developing for Xbox [One] and PS4 simultaneously. We hit those major platforms and then our goal as a development team is to make them run."
"We have that pipeline worked out," Mayberry explained, adding that it "makes more sense" to develop for both consoles simultaneously, even though Blizzard and Microsoft may not have formal plans drawn out yet.
"We've already done it with the 360 and PS3, so that team knows how to develop at the same time for both of those platforms. That's just what we do. And then Blizzard and Microsoft can work out whatever they work out," he said. Mayberry added that Ultimate Evil Edition is "not far off… [The console team] work[s] in parallel development with us so they're not far behind."
Diablo 3 has already been confirmed for PS4, but Blizzard's approach towards Xbox One is similar to that of the last-gen. The game was originally announced for PS3, but later confirmed to launch simultaneously for Xbox 360 as well.
Meanwhile, Diablo 3's first expansion, Reaper of Souls, is set to launch tomorrow, March 25.
