Diablo 3 has sucked the souls of over 10 million people

Since its launch in May, more than 10 million gamers have played Blizzard's Diablo 3.

Announced today as part of the company's Q2 2012 financial results, Blizzard boasted, "Through July, more than 10 million players have entered the world of the Sanctuary".

The game, which set a new industry launch record for PC games, sold over 3.5 million copies at launch in just the first 24 hours of availability. It was the #1 best-selling PC game for the first six months of 2012, despite releasing in mid-May. Within the first week of launch, the number grew to more than 6.3 million players.

Moving forward, Diablo 3 might attract even more players who have been holding out for the game to get PvP which is expected to arrive in patch 1.1. Meanwhile, Blizzard is hoping to keep players engaged in Diablo 3 by creating new alternatives to Diablo 3's end game rather than just the item grind.

Things weren't so good, however, for another well-known Blizzard title, World of Warcraft. Once the king of MMORPGs, it was reported that World of Warcraft's subscriptions have dropped well below 10 million to 9.1 million subscribers as of June 30, 2012.

On the whole, Blizzard reported "better-than-expected" financial results for the second quarter of 2012. Blizzard's GAAP net revenues were $1.08 billion.
