Despite the release and successful sales of both blockbuster titles, the war between DICE's Battlefield 3 and Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 rages on. We know how passionate fans are about their respective games, but what about the developers? How do the ones who are responsible for the design of the competing games feel about the competition.
Battlefield 3's Core Gameplay Designer Alan Kertz opened up to fans today in a IAmA session on Reddit. During the session Kertz answered many questions about his work on BF3 and what the future of the game has in store for fans. One particular question that was asked was about Battlefield 3's biggest competitor, Modern Warfare 3.
Muchy2k asked, "Have you played MW3 yet, and if you hadn't worked on BF3, which would you be playing more of right now?"
Despite what many of you want to read, there was no hostility in Kertz' response. There was no grudge, no attitude, just a genuine response.
"Before I worked on Battlefield I played it competitively. I like the open feeling and balance of vehicles and infantry," said Kertz.
"I like cod, they do an excellent SP and I have a lot of respect for what they have built. I haven't played 3 yet, and I haven't enjoyed the mp since MW1. That was truly a brilliant step forward for mp shooters."
To be honest, I'm not at all surprised by his response. Kertz isn't the only one who was less than thrilled with Black Ops. Regardless of how you feel about the latest installment of the Call of Duty series, the original Modern Warfare was a brilliant step forward; there's no denying that. At least in terms of multiplayer, COD 4 offered plenty. And I highly doubt any of the developers from either studio has hate towards the other – at least not one that spreads beyond marketing purposes.
