Director J.J. Abrams “would love” gay characters to be included in the Star Wars universe

"The fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility"

The recent release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens has sparked a surge of fans trying their hand in the theory business, and the super crazy Jar Jar Binks isn't the only one.

Fans have been wanting an openly gay character in the Star Wars universe for a while now, and according to director J.J. Abrams (via The Daily Beast) he would also love to see it happen.

I would love it,” he said. “To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”

It's possible Poe Dameron could still be the first openly gay Star Wars character, but it sounds as though we won't see any same-sex romance unfold on screen due to a follow up by John Boyega (Finn).

Who knows, there is still a possibility for the Poe theory to unfold in further movies, I guess we will just have to wait to find out for sure, however Abrams does want to see a more 'inclusive' Star Wars universe which includes gay characters.

The release date for Star Wars Episode 8 is December 15th, 2017, however, the official name for the movie is still yet to be confirmed.
