Disney announces free-to-play game Star Wars: Attack Squadrons

Disney Interactive revealed today the first details for Star Wars: Attack Squadrons, an upcoming free-to-play online game where players can customize "iconic ships" like X-Wings and TIE fighters and engage in dogfights that support up to 16 players.

As of right now there are three main PvP game modes: free for all, team dogfight, and base defense. The first two are fairly straight forward, while the last involves defending your base or coordinating an attack on your enemy's base. As you participate in matches you will unlock new items and upgrades to customize and improve your ship.

A reveal trailer was released, but it's more an overall representation of the game — the types of ships and environments you can expect to see — than actual gameplay footage. Attack Squadronsis being developed by Area 52 Games, in conjunction with Disney Interactive and LucasArts, for PC. It's set to launch in 2014, but fans can already sign up for a chance to participate in a close beta beginning early 2014.
